In 1987, Aberystwyth received an invitation to exchange with a German folk dance group in Jever, a beautiful town in Friesland, near Wilhemshafen in north-west Germany. In 1988, the Jever group visited Aberystwyth. A further exchange to Jever was arranged for 1990 and the visit back to Aberystwyth in 1992. On the 10th anniversary of the exchange, Jever again invited Aberystwyth to vist them which took place in the very hot summer of 1997. The Jever group will revisit Aberystwyth in July 1999. The Jever group was founded in 1980 and since 1993 have also formed a childrens' group and now consist of 30 adults and 40 children as active dancers. Our dances are from our area same as dances from lower German area, Sweden and the Netherlands. The group has made contact and friendships with dancegroups throughout Germany as well as other countries like Sweden, Netherlands, Begium, Lettland and the Ukraine. A special friendship has been formed with the Aberystwyth group which we will meet now the sixth time. Thecostume the group is wearing is the "Jeverländische Marschenbauer" and dates from the end of the 18th century.
